It will be recalled that following allegations of electoral flaws which characterized the election in Lagos,the National Sports Commission, NSC, refused to recognize it and ordered for fresh election in Abuja and the leadership of the body was eventually emerged by consensus.
Thus, ex-international powerlifter and coach, Mr. Monday Emoghavwe emerged as the new president of the sport Committee, with Hon. Ladidi Lamido and Salola Olasunbo as 1st Vice and 2nd Vice-President respectively.
Moments after they were elected, the fifteen –man member board was inaugurated by the Director-General of the National Sports Commission, Dr. Patrick Ekeji who represented the minister of Sports at the occasion.
Inaugurating the Committee, the minister of Sports called on the new executive to work towards evolving more sports that would bring about more associations under the Committee.
He noted that administering the sports under the Committee would be a daunting task but if they put their acts together, they would be able to put in place a platform for the physically challenged in the society to actively participate in sports.
“I urge you to evolve more sports that would compete favourably with powerlifting, table tennis and athletics. This is an opportunity for you to provide the necessary platform for other physically challenged people to take part in sports”
The minister challenged the Committee to build on the achievements of the past and create avenues for winning more laurels.
In a related development, he charged them to shun all vices such as visa racketeering and drug peddling, saying all had combined to dent the image of the country.
He said his ministry would extend all necessary support to the Committee but will not condone any act of misdemeanor.
Responding on behalf of the board, the new president, Emoghavwe said the election of the new board is a new dawn which would no doubt help in re-positioning the Committee.
He promised to participate actively in international politics of the game so that most of the injustice that was meted to the Committee would become a thing of the past.
Emoghavwe promised that physically challenged athletes under his administration would have nothing to do with illicit business saying nothing would be done to smear the image of the country.
