This was the position of former Nigerian athlete and AFN South-South Zone coach, Gabriel Okon when he spoke to Feverpitch yesterday on the chances of the country’s athletes at the 2012 Olympics.

He said most of the athletes are undergoing intensive training in various camps in the USA and Europe and would bring home laurels for the country.

“I want to assure you that athletics will again be Nigeria’s saving grace. As you already know, when the chips are down, athletics usually come to the rescue of the country.

“We are going to win medals in London. The only thing I cannot stick out my head to say is the number and colour of the medals. It may be gold, silver or bronze.

“Most of the athletes are training in Europe and the USA and the Athletics Federation of Nigeria is doing everything to give them all the necessary support”, he disclosed

Okon said with current rating of athletes like Blessing Okagbare, Doreen Amata, Tosin Oke, Damola Osayemi and a host of others, Nigerians should expect good performances from athletics.
