On being first among equals

While the law is specific on functions of the Federal Character Commission (FCC), the unwholesome manner of conducting the affairs of the commission by the chairman without recourse to consultation with commissioners is a cause for concern.

Committees 1, 2 and 3 have been composed to replace the traditional sectoral ones and the chairman is single-handedly running the affairs of the commission, which negates federal character principles.

The chairman issues certificate of compliance without input from commissioners and issues applications for waiver without recourse to commissioners.

The budget of the commission is shrouded in secrecy and the chairman hired consultants without due process, she operates as the sole administrator and not as chairman.

This is the first time in the history of the Commission that we the commissioners, who have taken oath to do our jobs conscientiously for the benefit of Nigerians, are taken into consideration.

We have raised this in several fora and will continue to do so until the right thing is done.
