The ruling of the Supreme Court on Wednesday finally put paid to the leadership tussle in the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP). Up till now the PDP, which is supposed to be the biggest opposition party in the country has not been able to play its role properly due to internal crisis.
Nigeria, as it is today cannot afford not to have a viable opposition party. There is a need for a vibrant opposition to keep the ruling party on its toes, as anything short of that will not help the nation’s democracy. In fact, I would say the ruling is a victory for democracy.
Lawmakers, governor and leaders at all levels need to be checked to ensure that they deliver the dividends of democracy to the people. But in a one party state, we cannot achieve that. The PDP should not take the recent ruling of the Supreme Court lightly. They should see it as an opportunity to right the wrong that they did to the country in their 16 years of leadership. The PDP should get its act together and carry out its role of an opposition party effectively. It should also look inwards and shore-up qualified candidates that will seek political offices during the next election so that Nigerians can have choices. All that Nigerians need are leaders who can deliver dividends of democracy. For the country to get out of its current economic crisis, it requires leaders who can think outside the box. And when there are options, it will be easier to select credible candidates than when the electorate are thorn between one or two persons. I also call on all aggrieved parties to give peace a chance. Those who were part of the Ali Modu Sheriff faction should join the Makarfi group so that they can all work together. Individualism will not help but if all members work together, they will succeed.
