Agriculture is the biggest employer of labour in Katsina State, therefore any step taken to develop the sector is welcome. So, I commend the state government for coming up with the plan to establish a Faculty of Agriculture at the Umaru Musa Yar’adua University. However, before it goes ahead with the project, there are other faculties that were established by the former governor Ibrahim Shema-led administration, that are still housed at a temporary site located within the state-owned polytechnic.
These faculties are facing challenges, especially in the area of infrastructure. My point here is that there is need for the current administration to complete projects left behind, so that at the end of this tenure, if there are uncompleted projects, whoever comes in after would take care of them. That is the only way the people can benefit.
So, I appeal to the Masari-led administration to shelve the establishment of the Faculty of Agriculture for now and ensure that all those faculties that are still operating from the temporary site are taken care of. It should also ensure that the Faculty of Medicine is up and running before establishing another one.
