A press statement signed by the legislative aide to the lawmaker, Mr Titus Agbo quoted Ebenyi as saying, “Onaiyekan’s spiritual uplift could not have come at a better time than now in view of the current security challenges facing Nigerian state.”

He urged him to use his new assignment to further intercede for the nation as he had always done by taking Nigeria’s case to the Papalcy for special prayers for peace, progress and unity of Nigeria.

He said, “Nigeria could not have asked for a better Christmas gift than your well deserved ascendancy to the highest secular body of cardinals in the Catholic church.”

Ebenyi traced his first encounter with Onaiyekan way back to his days as Nigeria’s Ambassador to Spain and Vatican, describing him as a man of great intellect, one with humble mien, courage and a disposition to assist at all times.

His elevation epitomizes the great challenge and opus which the Almighty God in His infinite mercies has found him worthy and capable of bearing the cross, Ebenyi remarked.
