Ondo Muslims protest assault on chief imam’s family by masqueraders, seek justice

Members of the Muslim community in Ondo State staged a peaceful protest on Thursday to denounce the recent assault on the family of the Chief Imam of Oke-Agbe Akoko, Muhammed Hussain Jegede, allegedly carried out by masqueraders and traditionalists.

The incident, which took place last week Thursday, involved the forcible entry of masqueraders into a mosque in Oke-Agbe, where they reportedly attacked the imam’s wives and children. Efforts by locals to intervene were unsuccessful, as they were overwhelmed and forced to flee for safety.

Leading the protest to the office of the Assistant Inspector General of Police (AIG), Zone 17 in Akure, prominent Islamic cleric Abdulazeez Surajudeen Folayemi strongly condemned the attack and rejected what he described as an inadequate and unacceptable “so-called settlement” between the parties involved.

“The proposed settlement is of no value and should be discarded,” Folayemi stated, calling for legal action and justice for the victims.

In response, AIG Ajani Musibau commended the Muslim community for their calm and responsible approach, assuring them that the case would be addressed in accordance with the law and resolved at the zonal level, rather than being transferred to Abuja.

The protest followed a petition submitted by the Muslim Initiative on Rights and Justice (MIRAJ), which demanded the arrest and prosecution of those responsible for the assault. In the petition, signed by the group’s National Amir, Adeniyi Alimi Adams, the attackers were accused of religious provocation, criminal assault, attempted murder, conspiracy, and gross violation of fundamental rights.
