Its National Executive Council (NEC) at its meeting in Yola in December 2009, dissolved the state committee following violence within two contending factions.

A three-man electoral committee was consequently put in place by the union’s national headquarters after the dissolution of the state council to organize a peaceful election.

The new chairman emerged unopposed like other officers after a delegate’s conference attended by NURTW President, Chief Gidado Hamman and other national officers from Abuja.

Speaking at the occasion, Governor Olusegun Mimiko who was represented by his Chief of Staff Dr Kola Ademujimi, praised the leadership of the union for having a peaceful election.

He noted that history was being made with the orderly manner the road transporters conducted themselves to choose a new leadership.

Mimiko promised to support the union in order to complement his administration’s efforts to move the state forward.

“I advise the winner of the election to reconcile all aggrieved persons. If it is possible, you can create opportunities for them to serve in your exco,” Mimiko said.

He enthused that gone were those days when cutlasses were used as an instrument to change baton of leadership in the union, stressing that the peaceful atmosphere will facilitate progress.

National President, Hamman, commended Governor Mimiko for his peaceful traits, promising that the union will rally round his administration.

The new chairman, promised to reconcile with all aggrieved members while commending his co-contestants, Oluwabamitojue Atijosan for honouring him by withdrawing from the race.

Among the dignitaries at the conference were traditional rulers including the Chairman, State Council of Obas, Oba Victor Folagbade Olateru Olagbegi, the Olowo of Owo, Olubaka of Oka Akoko, Oba Yusuf Adebori Adeleye, Deji of Akure, Oba Oluwadare Adepoju and Olupe of Ipe, Oba Francis Apata.
