The Ondo state government in conjunction with the Federal Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development has concluded plans to cultivate over 1000 hectares of banana plantation in the state.
The plantation, project, which products are mainly for exports, when completed will help to reduce poverty, create employment amongst the youths and increase the state internally generated revenue.
Commissioner for Agriculture, Asiwaju Adegboyega Adefarati, disclosed this at the formal presentation of the award of Champion of Smallholder farmers among State Government in the Southern Region of Nigeria, organised by the Nigeria Incentives Risk- Sharing Agricultural Lending NIRSAL in Akure recently.
Adefarati said the award was a product of the cumulative efforts and sound Agricultural policies of the State Governor, Oluwarotimi Akeredolu, and the expertise/ professionalism of the staff of the ministry.
The commissioner who was very elated with the award, thanked the immediate past Minister of Agriculture and Rural Development Chief Audu Ogbeh for counting the state worthy of being amongst the five states earmarked for the multi billion naira project.
Adefarati, who used the occasion to reel out some of the achievements of this administration in Agricultural sector, said the state would soon purchase tractors to be hired by farmers and also commission the Sunshine Fisheries Project.
Earlier while presenting the award to the Commissioner on behalf of the Management and staff of the Ministry, the acting Permanent Secretary, Segun Odusanya, appealed to NIRSAL to continue to make its services available to the farmers in the state.
