Police in Ondo have confirmed the arrest of a Boko Haram officer, identified as Idirs Ibrahim Babawo also known as Idiko and said to have been on the military’s “wanted” list for the past few months.
Babawo, according to the spokesman for the Ondo state police command, Femi Joseph, was arrested in Isua Akoko, the headquarters of the Akoko South-East Local Government Area of the state.
Police cannot confirm if the arrested man is a Boko Haram member but said he was travelling from Bauchi State, heading towards Lagos in a truck which broke down in Isua.
The PPRO stated that while the vehicle broke down and the driver had gone to look for a mechanic to repair it, leaving the suspect with the truck, the residents of the community became suspicious and called in the police.
“Having arrested him, we interrogated him, he said he was coming from Bauchi that he was going to Ibafo in Ogun State where he works and his vehicle broke down in Isua Akoko, we were not convinced with his responses, so we have to hand him over to the military to do their investigation.”
Meanwhile , the Assistant Director, Army Public Relations of the 32 Artillery Brigade, Akure, Captain Ojo Adelegan said the suspect was on serial number 165 on the wanted terrorists list of Boko Haram members pasted at all the military formations in the country.
Sources however said Babawo escaped from the North-East where the military has been carrying out onslaught against the jihadists.
Adelegan said, “We have sent out posters and banners carrying the photographs of the Boko Haram suspects. The suspect (Babawo) was brought to our office by the police and we and the Department of State Service conducted our preliminary investigation and confirmed that the man was on the wanted list.
