The fertiliser which was made from animal and plant wastes was showcased by the students at the just concluded 19th National Junior Engineers, Technicians and Scientists (JETS) competition held in Abuja.
The students said the objective of the project is to eradicate chemical-based fertiliser which can affect both soil and man.
Some of the experimental materials used in the project included dry banana leaves, dry palm fruit shells, dry poultry wastes, animal bones, corn stalks, cow dung among others.
The students believe the product will be of immense benefit to farmers through increasing their crop yields without having a damaging effect on the soil and health of crop consumers.
The organo-fertiliser developed by the students comes in three forms; powder, liquid and the granular.
The students said with financial support from government or corporate bodies, they will produce the fertiliser in commercial quantities, which can be supplied to farmers across the country.
“We hope to get this product to the market next year. But for now we produce in small quantity for the purpose of this competition” Ajiboye Diyat, one of the students who presented the technology told this reporter.
