The state parliament had last year passed the bill against hawking by children during schools hours.

The bill which seeks to prosecute any parent whose child is arrested for hawking recommend between six months and one year jail term for parents who flout the law.

The speaker who lamented non-enforcement of the bill, while playing host to the Minister for Women Affairs, Mrs Salamatu Hussaini Suleiman, in Akure last Thursday, charged the police to make sure that the law that prohibited street hawking during school hours was enforced.

He said “the essence of passing the bill into law is to make sure that children are not roaming the street during school hours. It is also to discourage street hawking among young children.

“Street hawking exposes the lives of children to danger. It is only parents who are heartless that will send their wards to the streets when their mates are busy reading in school.”
