The 19-man team led by the Secretary of the State Volleyball Association, Gbenga Akeredolu   left Nigeria  on Thursday full of expectations to make the country proud at the event that is billed to last from  October 24th- 30th, 2009.

Speaking to Trustsports in Lagos, Akeredolu expressed optimism that the team would lift the trophy to justify the confidence reposed in it by the State Governor Olusegun Mimiko and the Nigeria Volleyball Federation (NVBF).

He remarked that the team was in high spirit to do well in the week long event just as seven other countries are to participate at the event.

He added that the team just returned from the Governor Suswam National Open Volleyball Championship in Makurdi where it performed very well.

“This is the first time Ondo volleyball team will be representing the country in international tournaments, and it is a good omen for the team. We are not going to disappoint the nation at all. It was a great battle for us to secure this opportunity” he said.

In the same vein, coach of the team, Yekini Olanipekun affirmed that they were not afraid of any team despite the pedigree of teams taking part in the championship.

The coach added that Cote’D’Ivoire is the only team that could pose a threat at the event, but believed that they would overcome them no matter the opposition.
