A 29-year-old armed robbery suspect, Olalekan Ogundoju, has been arrested for allegedly snatching an Uber cab from its owner.

Ogundoja, of No.14, Shomorin Street, Ifako-Gbagada, Lagos, and an accomplice were said to have boarded the taxi, a Toyota Corolla, in front of African Shrine, Ikeja, on January 23, 2019 and instructed the driver to take them to Lekki.

The driver, Ogadinma Ikeagu, alleged that midway into the trip, the suspects brought out a gun and ordered him out of the car, adding that as soon as he stepped out of it, the suspects zoomed away.

The Lagos State Police Public Relations Officer, Chike Oti, who confirmed the incident, said that on January 23, 2019, at about 11.50pm, an Anti-Crime patrol team from the Maroko police station, led by the station’s Divisional Police Officer, Chief Suprintendent Isah Abdulmajid, while on crime prevention patrol came across Ikeagu crying for help.

Oti said Ogadinma narrated that his Toyota Corolla saloon car registration number KJA 69 FE had just been snatched by two passengers he picked at the African Shrine.

“The DPO took the driver in his patrol vehicle and they drove in the same direction taken by the thieves when they were escaping with the car. Fortunately for the distressed Uber driver, the police team was able to intercept the car within Victoria Island.

“Although one of the thieves escaped, the team arrested his crime partner, Olalekan Ogundoju. He was immediately searched and two wooden prototypes of Beretta pistol were recovered from him,” the police spokesman added.

Oti further said Ogundoju confessed to have committed the crime, adding that the police were still hunting his accomplice to face the law.
