A ghastly accident occurred in the Ogolonto area of Ikorodu, Lagos, on Sunday, claiming one life and leaving six others hospitalized.

The crash happened around the Majidun axis, inward Ogolonto, directly opposite the MRS Filling Station.

The impact of the collision was severe, resulting in extensive damage to the vehicles involved.

Emergency responders were quickly deployed to the scene, and the injured victims were rushed to nearby hospitals for treatment. Sadly, one of the victims succumbed to her injuries and was pronounced dead.

The General Manager of the Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA), Mr. Olalekan Bakare-Oki, confirmed the incident, stating that it involved a Volkswagen commercial bus with registration number EPE 494 XM and a stationary tipper truck.

Bakare-Oki said preliminary findings revealed that the ill-fated commercial bus—which had been chartered to convey passengers to a scheduled programme in Ogijo—experienced brake failure.

He added that the driver, who was reportedly speeding, lost control of the vehicle and collided forcefully with a tipper truck parked by the roadside to purchase diesel.

“The brutal impact resulted in the instantaneous death of an adult female passenger, while five female occupants and one male sustained severe, life-threatening injuries. All five injured victims were rushed to the nearby Benic Special Hospital, while the remains of the deceased were handed over to security personnel who conveyed them to the General Hospital, Ikorodu, for formal documentation.

“In a swift and coordinated response, LASTMA operatives pursued and apprehended the tipper truck driver who attempted to flee upon witnessing the incident. The commercial bus driver was also arrested. Both individuals were subsequently handed over to officers of the Ipakodo Police Division for comprehensive investigation.

“To restore order and ensure smooth vehicular movement toward the Ikorodu Garage, LASTMA personnel removed the mangled vehicles from the roadway,” he added.

Meanwhile, the LASTMA General Manager admonished motorists to exercise utmost restraint, vigilance, and discipline on the highways by avoiding excessive speed.

He cautioned that speeding significantly reduces a driver’s ability to respond to sudden mechanical failures or unexpected hazards, thereby increasing the likelihood of catastrophic outcomes.
