ONE, an advocacy group against poverty and diseases has sought to partner with MTN Foundation on sustainable development in Nigeria.
Speaking during a courtesy visit to MTN Nigeria in Lagos, Co-founder of ONE, Mr. Paul Hewson said the organisation was seeking a partnership with the MTN Foundation because they believe there was sync in the values of both organisations.
“Africa has a youthful generation that knows the continent is wealthy but challenged with the issues of mismanagement. That is why I have to thank the MTN Foundation for what you are doing in addressing some of these issues” Hewson said.
Calling for a strategic partnership, Hewson noted that “ONE has over 3.5 million members in Nigeria and many of them are mobile. Our model in Nigeria has to be different from the ones we have used elsewhere to ensure these individuals are heard. “We are not asking for money because we are not a fund raising organisation but we are asking people to use their voices through their mobile phones to make a difference. We believe that ability to connect and communicate will make them speak on issues and push whatever campaign we have effectively”.
Concerning their choice of MTN Foundation, Hewson explained that “during our research on organisations and individuals we can partner with in Nigeria, many names were suggested but that of the MTN Foundation stood out. That means MTN’s philanthropy has been noticed and is well appreciated. As this movement move forward, we hope to get more loyalty and content…we are looking forward to that kind of support”.
The CEO, MTN Nigeria Mr. Mike Ikpoki said the MTN Foundation was willing to collaborate with any organisation that is focus and ready to impact positively on the lives of Nigerians and Africans.
In her remarks, Executive Secretary of the MTN Foundation Ms. Nonny Ugboma noted that “as at today, the MTN Foundation has spent over N10 billion on various intervention projects across the country. We are very glad that Nigerians appreciate all of these efforts and we are willing to even do more in the area of sustainable development for Nigerians”.
