‘Only 5,025 librarians are registered to practise’

The Registrar of the Librarians’ Registration Council of Nigeria, Professor Michael Afolabi said only a total of 5,025 liberians have so far been registered to practice. 
Prof. Afolabi made the remarks at the 7th induction of Registered Librarians in Nigeria and the 3rd mandatory ‎conference of Certified Librarians in Abuja.
He said the council had in line with Act 12 of 1995 which established it, inducted 354 librarians who have qualified to practice in 2016.
He said the council would continue to work within its mandate to ensure that only qualified librarians are certified to practice the profession in Nigeria.
He said the council will continue to ensure that library and information science sector delivers maximum impact on education and learning, adding that the use of Massive Open Online Courses (MOOCs) must be strengthened to improve access to information.
The council has also commenced the assessment of the state of school libraries in ‎Nigeria with a view to identifying gaps and developing ‘needs-based’ intervention strategies that will transform the libraries into modern learning centres.
