An independent survey has shown that only 50 and 53 per cent of teachers have the requisite qualifications in the North-West and North eastern regions respectively, the Administrative Manager of Outside School Foundation, Mr. Victor Ogbonnaya, has revealed.
He said that the proportion was alarming and disturbing compared to the South-West and South-East with more qualified teachers in all subjects of studies. The survey which was conducted by Education Sector Support Program in Nigeria (ESSPIN) indicated that teachers in the two regions have low level of educational attainments.
He said ESSPIN conducted assessment on 1,200 basic education teachers in Kano on a reading comprehensive test and correct sentences written by a 10-year-old child on form, content and punctuation and found that 78% of those who undertook the test had ‘limited’ knowledge in English language.
