The head-to-head record between the two countries is equally in favour of the African champions – five wins, a draw and a loss.
And so when this playoff pairing was done last month, most Nigerian fans said it will be a walkover.
However, coach Stephen Keshi is first to say they do not expect Ethiopia to be pushovers.
“I have a lot of respect for the Ethiopians and all the teams that made it to the last round of the qualifier and I am certain that it will be tough, unpredictable and exciting for both the so-called big teams and the minnows,” said Keshi.
“The last time we played the Ethiopians it was quite tough and I know when we meet next it’s going to be the same thing.
“All we need to do is to be focused, concentrate and pray for good health for our best players and the rest will be history.”
Interestingly, when both countries first clashed at the 1982 AFCON in Libya, Nigeria thrashed Ethiopia 3-0 with Keshi getting a brace and Ademola Adeshina the other goal.
Italy-based winger Nnamdi Odumadi said they want to win Addis Ababa for the fans, who have supported them.
“We want to win the game for Nigeria because we have been getting the needed support from the fans,” the Brecia of Italy forward told MTNFootball.com
“It is going to be a tough game no doubt, but I am upbeat we will come out victorious at the end of the day. We know the importance of the game.
“I am urging the fans to keep faith with the team as we will not disappoint them.”
Sunshine Stars right back Solomon Kwambe told MTNFootball.com they are going for nothing less than victory in Addis Abba.
“We have heard a lot about their weather, that will not be an obstacle for us to beat them. All our players have played under such weather at some point that won’t be an excuse. We are highly motivated to do for the maximum,” said Kwambe.
