The Chairman, Association of Licensed Telecommunications Operators of Nigeria (ALTON), Engineer Gbenga Adebayo has lamented what he described as multiple taxation on telecom operators; saying only an executive order can address the problem.

Engineer Adebayo who spoke at the maiden edition of Nigerian Telecom Leadership Summit organized by Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) sought end to irrelevant taxes and levies charged Telecom operators.

“As at last week Thursday morning, the total count of taxes and levies on the industry stands at 39. This is really a problem because some of the taxes are not relevant to the industry,” he said.

Former Minister of Communications Technology, Dr. Omobola Johnson called for digital revolution for Nigeria to be at par with other developed nations.

“We need another revolution, it’s about digital revolution; it’s about the whole economy in all ramification of sectors,” she said.

Vice President of Nigeria, Professor Yemi Osinbajo said, “Today, in virtually all aspects of human life, telecommunications have become indispensable,” he said.

Osinbajo who was represented by the Special Adviser to the President on Political Affairs, Senator Babajide Ojude mentioned that the Federal Government is looking at investment areas of interest highlighted by the telecom regulator, particularly, the desire by the Commission to deploy at least 120,000 metropolitan optic fibre connectivity to achieve pervasive broadband penetration across the country.
