The Director, Obafemi Awolowo University Centre for Distance Learning (OAUCDL), Professor Michael Adeyeye, has said that only one-third of degree seeking Nigerians can be admitted by the existing higher institutions in the country.
 Professor Adeyeye made the remark in a statement recently and emphasized the need for adopting e-learning system as an alternative way of meeting the education needs of teeming Nigerians.
 “We are excited about the success of e-learning programme in the university. This programme opens up opportunities for everybody to go to school. The worker who wants to further his studies whilst still retaining his job; as well as students who are qualified for admission but are denied due to space constraints,” he said in the statement.
 He added that the e-learning programme is a step in the right direction, as it gives opportunity for knowledge to many Nigerians. He pointed out that, applications for the 2015/2016 degree programmes in accounting, economics and nursing are currently open, after the successful completion of examinations for its 317 students. Similarly, the vice chancellor of the university, Professor Bamitale Omole, said distant learning mode of admission does not in any way imply inferiority in status among the students of the university.  “Our university guards jealously the integrity of its degrees and diploma whether obtained in the conventional or distance learning mode,” he said.
