In a fitting and graceful close to her tenure, Mrs. Evelyn Onome Oyome, outgoing President of the Ladies Golfers Association of Nigeria (LGAN), capped her leadership journey on a high note as she emerged overall winner of the 10th Enugu Ladies Open Golf Championship, held last weekend at the Enugu Sports Club Golf Course.

Speaking after her victory, an elated Oyome described golf as a “sport that unites people across all walks of life,” emphasizing its health and fitness benefits.

“Golf is a sport that brings people together regardless of background. It’s also an excellent way to stay fit — walking a full course covers about five to seven kilometres, and doing that three to five times a week gives you an optimal amount of endurance exercise for the heart,” she explained.

Reflecting on the tournament and her win, Oyome expressed deep satisfaction, describing the event as a memorable conclusion to her time as LGAN President.

“This victory is special to me because it comes at the end of my tenure. It’s my first time playing in Enugu, and I’m truly overwhelmed by the warmth and spirit here. I played 84 on the first day, 80 on the second, and 83 on the final round — it was truly a rewarding challenge over 54 holes,” she said with pride.

Oyome commended Lady Nkiru Agbogu, Captain of the Ladies Golfers Section of Enugu Golf Club, and her organizing committee for hosting what she described as a “well-coordinated and inspiring championship” that showcased the growing strength of women’s golf in Nigeria.

The Enugu Ladies Open, themed “Fostering a Sense of Camaraderie with Golfing,” featured over 50 female golfers from across Nigeria and 75 male guest players. Prizes and trophies were awarded across various categories during the colorful closing ceremony.

 

As she prepares to hand over leadership of the LGAN to Dr. Lami Ahmed of IBB Golf Club, Oyome’s victory serves as both a symbolic and triumphant finale — a celebration of her dedication to promoting women’s golf across Nigeria.

 

“Ending my tenure as both President and overall winner is deeply humbling. It’s a reminder that with passion, focus, and teamwork, we can always finish strong,” Oyome concluded with a smile.
