The court had earlier ordered the IGP to release one Onyebuchi Eze from detention to undergo surgery over acute appendicitis, but the order was not executed amounting to contempt charges.

The court order signed by the presiding judge, O.A. Adeniyi said, “The first respondent (Onovo) shall appear in this court in person on August 30, 2010 and show-cause why he shall not be committed to prison for contempt of orders of this court.” The court further ordered that Mr. Eze be produced in court on the same day.

A rights group, International Human Rights Protection Initiative, had filed a case against Onovo and two other police officers over the illegal detention of Eze, and two others.

The Police Force Public Relations Officer Emmanuel Ojukwu said the IGP respects established laws and will comply with the court order. “He can appear in court or send a representative,” he said.
