A candidate for the Abia Central Senatorial ticket of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Rep. Sam Onuigbo, has called on individuals involved in the conduct of the party’s May 18 senatorial primary to clarify their roles in the allocation of votes during the exercise.

Onuigbo said concerns raised over the outcome of the primary had generated reactions within the party, adding that party stakeholders should focus on preserving the image and unity of the APC in the South East.

He was reacting to a media report dismissing a petition submitted by some APC stakeholders in Abia Central Senatorial District regarding alleged irregularities in the conduct of the primary election.

Recall that a group identifying itself as leaders of the APC in Abia Central had petitioned the National Chairman of the party, Prof. Nentawe Goshwe Yilwatda, alleging that Onuigbo’s claims about the primary were capable of creating disaffection within the party ahead of the 2027 general election.

However, in a statement made available to journalists in Abuja yesterday, Onuigbo, a former two-term member of the House of Representatives and sponsor of Nigeria’s Climate Change Act, urged party leaders to review the figures announced from the primary election.

He called on the APC National Working Committee (NWC) to examine the vote allocations announced for the three contestants in the exercise.

Onuigbo also referenced concerns earlier raised by former Senator Nkechi Nwaogu, who reportedly petitioned the party leadership over the conduct of the primary in parts of the senatorial district.

According to him, the issues arising from the exercise have affected unity within the party in Abia Central Senatorial District.

He further urged the party leadership to thoroughly investigate complaints surrounding the conduct of the primary election and take necessary steps to strengthen internal processes within the APC in the state.

“The national leadership of the party should carefully review the issues surrounding the Abia Central Senatorial primary election and address concerns raised by stakeholders in the interest of fairness and party unity,” Onuigbo stated.
