A financial institution, Opay, has extended its N1.2 billion 10-year scholarship scheme to students of Obafemi Awolowo University (OAU), Ile-Ife, Osun State.
The financial institution’s scholarship award, which was aimed at providing financial relief to undergraduates for a decade has benefited two universities, with OAU as the third beneficiary.
During the visit to the institution, the financial institution’s Chief Public Affairs Officer, Mr. Justin Zhang, stressed the importance of education in nation-building, expressing the firm’s commitment to empowering students.
“Obafemi Awolowo University has a legacy of producing some of the nation’s brightest minds, and we are proud to support these future leaders as part of our broader commitment to education and empowerment,” he said.
Elated, OAU’s Deputy Vice Chancellor, Admin, Professor Yomi Daramola expressed delight over the financial support, saying it would ease the financial burden and help students to remain focused on their academics.
“The university has long been committed to supporting indigenous students, but our efforts can only go so far. This generous donation from OPay marks a significant milestone, going beyond what the alumni have been able to achieve over the years.
“It provides a crucial safety net, ensuring that students can focus on their education rather than worrying about basic survival. This contribution will have a lasting impact, empowering students to pursue their academic goals with confidence and stability,” he said.
The university’s Student Union Government (SUG) president, Omoboriowo Isaac, a 600L Clinical Sciences Department student stated that the scholarship would help to achieve his academic dream.
“As a student in the Department of Clinical Sciences with the highest tuition fees at OAU, receiving this scholarship will be a tremendous relief. It will significantly ease the financial burden on my family, allowing me to focus on my studies.
“This support ensures that I can complete my degree and pursue my academic goals with full confidence,” he said.
