Annual music fiesta, OperaAbuja concert will hold tomorrow at the Congress Hall of the Transcorp Hilton Hotel, Abuja.
The ninth edition event organised by the Abuja Metropolitan Music Society (AMEMUSO) with the themed ‘Arise,’ captures the nation’s socio-economic mood in its theme song – ‘Arise.’ This year’s outing will feature classical opera, Nigerian indigenous music as well as Afro-American tunes.
Founder of the group and wife of former German ambassador to Nigeria, Maria Cecilia Toledo de Schmillen, is already in the country in the company of former Peruvian minister of culture, Suzana Baca, both of whom would be participating in joint and solo performances.
Schmillen informed that a two-time Grammy Award winner and her team of musicians would be performing with the choir.
The evening will feature a presentation of the group’s first musical album, which has been in the offing for three years.
“The most beautiful thing is that we will release our first musical album with Baca after three years of work. The music captures three cultures, Nigerian’s, South American Afro music as well as classical European opera. So, it comprises opera, Afro music and tradition Nigerian music. The proceeds will go into AMEMUSO projects,” she said. “We are extremely proud to say that Baca, who has recorded with the world’s big names was part of our story.”
The event will feature two Nigerian singers in the Diaspora, one from New York and the other from London. They would be stepping into the shoes of Paris-based Nigerian singer, Omo Bello, who has been a regular with the choir for some time now.
“This year, we are tasking ourselves to do all we are doing because we believe that our message of hope – ‘Arise,’ will encourage us to arise together,” Schmillen said.
