Atunwa was declared winner with 58, 227 votes as against Shagaya’s 31, 469 votes. But Shagaya, son of a business mogul, Hajia Muinat Shagaya, and associate of First Lady Patience Jonathan, said several infractions were observed in the final results which have substantially affected the election.
“As we receive and assess copies of the official results and review the general conduct of the election in Ilorin West/Asa federal constituency, several infractions have been observed. We believe these infractions have substantially affected the outcome of the election. These infractions, in the interest of our democracy, posterity and rule of law, must never go unchallenged.
“It is against this background that we would be challenging the outcome of the election in our federal constituency in the law court.
“Having said this, we urge our supporters to remain calm, peaceful and orderly and to avoid any provocation from any quarters,” he said.
