Nigeria’s Opposition lawmakers coalition has patted the Rivers State Governor, Siminialayi Fubara, for implementing Supreme Court Judgement despite provocations from the Rivers State House of Assembly led by Martins Amaaewhule.

The coalition in a live press conference bemoaned access denial to Fubara on Wednesday for budget presentation at the official quarters of the state House of Assembly along Aba Road, Port Harcourt, where lawmakers loyal to his predecessor, Nyesom Wike, have been holding their sittings.

Speaking through their spokesperson, Hon. Ikenga Ugochinyere, they recalled the governor sent an invitation to the pro-Wike lawmakers to a meeting to iron out some skirmishes for the interest of Rivers people but to please their paymaster they declined.

Saluting Governor Fubara for his humility, the Opposition lawmakers urged the governor to continue to man the wheels of governance.

He said, “We are proud of the Rivers State Governor, His Excellency, Siminialayi Fubara’s compliance with Supreme Court Judgement. After receiving the judgement, the governor sent an invitation in a letter signed by the Secretary to the State Government, Dr Tammy Danagogo, addressed to speaker Amaaewhule leading the lawmakers loyal to the FCT Minister, Nyesom Wike. The letter dated March 7, 2025 reads: “I hereby write in furtherance of His Excellency’s promise stated in my letter dated 5th March 2025 to notify you that His Excellency has received the Supreme Court Judgment, and has therefore directed me to invite you and your colleagues -the Honourable members of Rivers State House of Assembly, to a meeting to discuss:-Provision of a befitting space for the Assembly’s sittings. Payment of all outstanding remuneration or allowances of the Honourable members. Presentation of Budget and sundry matters.

“But they ignored the invitation. Again in line with Supreme Court Judgement he went to present 2025 budget and they denied him access. Despite the fact that the whole world knows, that the pro Wike lawmakers lost their seat at the time they decamped, everyone saw it, but the Supreme Court in their judgement said Gov Fubara should recognize these lawmakers that decamped from the party they were elected. Not everybody will have that courage or spirit of peace like Fubara, he surprised most of us, as a democrat he accepted that judgement whole heartedly and started implementing immediately.

“They are running around in their hide out to amend the local government law in the middle of the election to get former local government chairmen who left years back to come back. We commend Governor Fubara for complying with the court judgement about budget presentation. He reached out to House of Assembly members to come for a meeting, something that Wike will not do. He called them to a meeting for solutions to move forward but they boycotted the meeting and refused to come. Who are they?! The state will not burn and we t allow them destabilize that state that belongs to our party.

“The Governor again wrote a letter to you for presentation of Rivers State 2025 budget, it was delivered to them, he called the Speaker on the phone several times but he didn’t pick. That’s to tell you people whose mind is dark, all they want is anarchy, they want Rivers people to suffer. Wike has been the aggressor from day 1. We salute the Governor, Fubara for his humility to the extent of ensuring that despite the provocation he continues to run the wheel of governance in the last four days.”
