Oshiomhole beats PDP’s Airhiavbere in own ward

As unofficial results from yesterday’s governorship election began to come in, there were indications that the Action Congress of Nigeria (ACN) was leading.
The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) candidate, Major General Charles Airhiavbere (rtd) lost in his own polling unit where he voted, as Adams Oshiomhole led in poll results.
Also, in Ward 2, Unit 7, ACN had 169 to PDP’s 129. Ward 2 Unit 7 is where the Chief of Staff to the President, Chief Mike Oghiadomhe, hails from.
The PDP candidate got 8 votes in Ward 1 Unit 20, Garrick Memorial Grammar School, in Oredo local government area.
The ACN candidate got 360 votes while the All Nigeria Peoples Party (ANPP) candidate Solomon Edebiri polled 2 votes.
The ACN governorship candidate, however won in his Ward 10 Unit 4 in Etsako Local Government Area with 574 votes, beating his rivals who had no vote at all. In Ward 12 unit 7 in Ikabigbo in Etsako West Local Government Area, ACN had 519, PDP 19.
A PDP chieftain in the state, Chief Gabriel Igbinedion, the Esama of Benin, also lost in his own polling unit of Oredo Ward 2 Unit 1, as ACN got 176 votes, PDP 14 votes. In Unit 2, ACN got 14 votes against PDP’s 22 votes.
These are not yet official results from INEC, but results from the counting and declarations by officials in the presence voters after voting.
The results counted last night in various wards and polling units indicated that the ACN candidate was leading in the results declared at polling units from both the Edo North and South.
In Ward 2, Unit 8 in Fugar, ACN won by 141 to PDP’s 87 votes. In Ward 2, Unit 1, ACN got 133 votes while PDP got 96 votes.
In Adohan, Orhiomwon Local Government Area, ACN got 259 votes to PDP’s 44 votes. At Idunokhoi, in the same Local Government Area, ACN recorded 171 to PDP’s 39 votes.
At Orhiomwhon, Urhonigbe North, Polling Unit 7, ACN polled 116, PDP 36; at Ward 04, ACN 117, PDP 27. At Okhwae, ACN polled 221, PDP 71.
At Umuakpe in Oredo Local Government Area, ACN polled 173 to PDP’s 20. In Ozalla, Owan West local government area, ACN won all the units of Ward 1 with total of 1,137 for ACN and 599 for PDP.
At Okada Grammar School, ACN won by 265 to PDP’s 62.
At Eweka Primary School at Egor Local Government Area, ACN polled 300 to PDP’s 17; at the Oba Market in Oredo ACN polled 404 to PDP’s 54.
At the S&T in Egor Local Government Area, ACN polled 200 to PDP’s 25. The Ward 6, the total sum of Units 1 to 10 in Niger College, Ikpoba Okha LG indicates that ACN won by 1575 to PDPs 54.

Large turn out of voters
There was large turnout of voters in the governorship.
In some parts of Edo South materials got to their polling units at about 9:00am while in some areas materials did not get to their units until around 11:00 in the morning.
In Oredo ward 1 and 2 the ACN agent, Chief John Oyegun said he was pleased with the conduct of the election.
Governorship candidate Airhiavbere who arrived at his Garrick Memorial College polling centres at about 9:45am reassured that the days election were peaceful, indicating that there was water tight security on ground.
Airhiavbere who was in company of his wife, Yetunde and other family members said, “The security is very tight, electorate are coordinated. Everyone is going about their businesses. I assure you the election will be peaceful and credible.”
But the governor of Edo State and the candidate of the ACN, Oshiomole said the INEC with its chairman Professor Atahiru Jega were not doing enough for the nation.
The governor, who spoke after being accredited in his place, said, “As we speak now in Oredo and Ego Local Government Areas [Benin city] materials have not arrived in majority of the places by 11:00am.
“The people have queued waiting for them and at New Era area in Benin, a different register was brought there. If accreditation that is supposed to stop by 12:00 noon, by 11:00am you have not brought materials, obviously there was no plan to conduct election,” he said.
He said the plan is to frustrate the electorate.
Tragedy: 3 policemen, INEC staff perish in boat mishap
It was tragic election day in Edo State yesterday as four people died in Ologbo area of the state on yesterday.
The State Commissioner of Police Femi Adenaike, who came to take charge of the election security, disclosed to our correspondent that among the dead were three policemen and one staff of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC).
The commissioner said the death was as a result of an accident involving a boat carrying INEC materials and officials meant for the governorship election in the state.
He was however not forthcoming as to what has happened to the electoral materials but said two of the bodies had been recovered as at the time of talking.
Oshiomhole warns against declaring fake result
The Edo State Governor, Adams Oshiomhole has warned INEC against declaring results that do not reflect the wishes and expectations of the people.
Oshiomhole who gave the warning at his home town in Etsako West local government area after voting alleged that INEC deliberately disfranchised a good number of voters in the state especially in Oredo and Ego local government areas.
PDP tackles Oshiomhole
In a swift reaction, Edo PDP wants INEC to take Oshiomhole’s allegations serious.
The party’s state publicity secretary Mathew Urhoghide told newsmen in Benin on yesterday that the candidate of ACN has already condemned the process and the outcome making the election contentious.
PDP said the ACN had already said the election is a sham and that it is unacceptable to him.
He maintained that some actions of the ACN violate the electoral law like results of the election already been posted on the internet even before the official declaration by INEC.
