Stephen Osuchukwu, Modestus Ukeoma and Sor Sen have emerged first, second and third place winners respectively, of the tenth edition of the annual Spanish visual arts competition.
The event this year was tagged ‘The ten of ten’ showcasing the 25 finalists’ works as well as the winning works from the current edition and those of the previous years since the competition began ten years ago.
Spanish ambassador to Nigeria who said over 40 entries, were received for this edition added that he found the exhibition particularly interesting because it shows how Nigerian art trends have evolved over the years.
Commenting on the quality of entries received, he said: “This year dozens of young Nigerian artists showed us that Nigeria is a country with an enormous artistic capital, which has witnessed the birth of great contemporary art figures.
“This year the African continent is the theme of the Visual Art Competition, personalised through the figure and work of the painter Miquel Barceló. Initially Barcelo’s work was influenced by the Avant-garde, Art Brut and American abstract Expressionism,” he informed.
Mrs. Nkechi Ejele expressed delight that this year’s theme focused on the relation between Spain and Africa adding that: “The programme has attained greater heights and improved over the years in terms of global appeal.”
Ejele who described the works as depicting professionalism and a reflection of the cultural wealth of both countries, said: “Nigeria has vibrant relationship with Spain and as such has always supported the event through the participation of the Ministry and the National Gallery of Art.”
Osuchukwu was awarded a paid trip to Madrid to visit the 2016 edition of ARCO, one of the main contemporary art fairs of the international circuit, where every year more than 160 art galleries, from all over the world, take part.
The exhibition ended on Friday.
