The wife of Osun State Governor, Mrs. Kafayat Oyetola has pledged to intensify efforts to end the practice of Female Genital Mutilation (FGM) as five communities in Irepodun Local Government Areas of the state abandoned the practice.
With fanfare, the people of Oke Eran, Temidire, Ayeloja, Ganga and Olorunsogo communities, who converged at the palace of the Olobu of Ilobu, Oba Ashiru Olatoye Olaniyan, declared that female circumcision is now an abomination in their communities.
While presenting certificate of FGM abandonment to the communities, the First Lady reiterated the dangerous implications of the practice and promised to increase advocacy and sensitization on the need to desist from cutting girls based on myths and misconceptions.
The event was facilitated by a non-governmental organisation, Action Health Incorporated (AHI) in collaboration with the s Ministry of Health and the Ministry of Women and Children Affairs with the support of United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA).
