• Commission to relocates RAC centres in Niger

The Osun Election Petitions Tribunal yesterday granted a subpoena compelling the Resident Electoral Commissioner (REC) of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) in the state to produce the nomination form and academic certificates used by Sen Ademola Adeleke in the 2018 governorship election.

Governor Adegboyega Oyetola and the All Progressives Party (APC) had on August 5, submitted a petition before the tribunal in Osogbo.

Oyetola and APC are challenging the election results from 749 polling units across 10 LGAs for various electoral malpractices, especially over-voting.

INEC had declared Adeleke as the winner of the July 16, governorship election, having polled 403,271 votes against 375,027 polled by Oyetola.

At the Wednesday sitting of the tribunal in Osogbo, counsel to Oyetola and the APC, Saka Layoonu (SAN), informed the tribunal that the petitioners had filed a subpoena dated November 3, compelling the REC to appear before it.

Meanwhile, INEC in Niger State has disclosed that some Registration Area Centres (RACs) affected by insecurity and flood in Rafi, Mashegu and other LGAs will be relocated before the 2023 general elections.

The commission said the affected centres had been assessed and found unsuitable for the conduct of elections.

The Head of Operations in the state, MB Yusuf, disclosed this during a stakeholders’ meeting ahead of the general elections.

He said that in Rafi LGA, the classrooms that the commission would use as RACs had been converted to military camps due to insecurity, while some in Shiroro and other areas had been affected by flood.

He further said that the roofs of some classrooms used as RACs in Mashegu LGA had been blown off by wind.
