Governor Bassey Otu has approved an increase in the monthly subvention to state-owned female football club, Pelican Stars, from N5 million to N15 million, citing the team’s improved performance.

The governor said the move is aimed at boosting the club’s morale, strengthening its competitiveness, and deepening support for women’s football in the state.

In a related development, the administration has outlined plans to upgrade facilities at the U.J. Esuene Stadium in Calabar, including renovation of the state box and broader improvements across the complex.

Chairman of the Cross River State Sports Commission, Etta Lawrence Itanya, said the upgrades are designed to reactivate regular sporting activities at the stadium.

He also announced that the third edition of the Queens Cup will hold in 2026.

According to Itanya, the tournament—championed by the governor’s wife, Eyoawan Bassey Otu—is aimed at promoting female participation in sports.

A total of 36 teams are expected to compete in the tournament.

He said the initiative is designed to empower the girl child, promote grassroots talent development, and provide a platform for discovery and social impact.

Itanya urged both private and government-backed teams to register free of charge and called on participants to uphold discipline and sportsmanship throughout the competition.
