Some are already afraid of being the first to leave the contest, one wouldn’t want to be a runner up and some are scared of flopping on stage.
Precious, who had put out a stunning performance told our correspondent he is afraid of an early exit. He linked his fears to how Moses, in the last season, who most people thought was good for the prize based on his unparallel singing capability on the show, left early, leaving everyone in consternation.
Precious said he was deeply concerned because the in-house judges had voted him the best in the first performance. He didn’t see that as a strength. AM-OK, Vickiola, Lynn and Mattade expressed similar concerns. But tonight certainly one act will leave, hope it’s not one of these.
Christian, told our correspondent his biggest fear is being a first runner-up. He couldn’t imagine standing in the final and watch N15 million, a Rav4 and a Glo Ambassadorship go to some other person. That will be traumatising he said.
Oni is scared of falling on stage. Why she feared she could fall, she didn’t say, but that is her fears.
Oluwakemi worries more on being able to put up strong performance down the line.
They all agree, the M-Net platform is sufficient to build a music career even without wining as money isn’t all that matters.
Meanwhile, in their first contest, they did songs from hit movies.
Opening the show was the lovely Lynn who gave a karaoke-like interpretation of the Academy Award winning, “What a Feeling”, from the movie Flashdance originally performed by Irene Ciara.
Mattade performed another Academy Award winning number by Brian Adams, “Everything I Do”, featured in the movie Robin Hood, Prince of Thieves. Though he expressed the lyrics, the power of the song was lost in his interpretation and did not deliver the attitude the song has always been known for.
Vickiola delivered Christina Aguillerra’s “Reflection” from the Walt Disney Animated Classic, Mulan effortlessly and left the audience yearning for more.
Precious stuuned the audience with “Go the Distance” from another Disney animated feature, Hercules. Much to the delight of all, he definitely went the distance. Going beyond sustaining the newly-found tempo of the show, he raised the bar with an inspired performance of the otherwise drab ballad.
Vicky earned a resounding applause for allowing her exciting personality reflect in her rendition of “We are One” from Lion King II. Turning the simple lyrics into a sing-a-long for the audience was a huge feat easily conquered by the charming 20 year old.
Aspiring producer Tee Songz rendered the loving ballad, “Come What May” from the musical Moulin Rouge unrecognizable. Guest commentator Mo’Cheddah thought the song selection was absolutely wrong for him even though she saw the quality of his voice.
The proud single mom Oluwakemi attempted to bring back the 80’s with her version of Etta James’ “Something’s Gotta Hold on Me” as performed by Christina Aguillera from the movie Burlesque.
Victim of another poor song selection was Oni who performed Deborah Cox’s “Definition of Love” from the movie Akeelah and the Bee. Though her delivery was almost impeccable, reflecting vocal capability, it lacked the zest the song required and was easily forgotten at this stage in the competition where contestants are battling for loyal fans as well as votes.
Setting the show back on its head was Christian, the 35 year old semi-finalist singer from Abuja who transported the audience to “A Whole New World” from yet another Disney animated feature, Aladdin. His cover was bold and refreshing, reminding the audience that there are still some very strong contenders in the competition.
Freeze, one of the in-house judges applauded the efforts of all the contestants, saying four of them shone the brightest to him. They were: Vickiola who he thought did justice to a difficult song; Precious, whom he nicknamed ‘Confidence’; Vicky, who he said was just fantastic and AM-OK, who was a lot more than just OK. For the rest of the contestants, he thought, Lynn started well but lost in it somewhere; Mattade still had to look deeper to find magic; Tee Songz still managed to shine though the song choice was wrong for him; Oluwakemi should have paid more attention to her singing than her dancing; Oni had potential but had to find the right song for herself and Christian, though apparently flew through turbulence, found a great landing for his number.
