Can you tell us a little about yourself?
We are the Ajayi Brodas. We are blood brothers. Our real names are Peter and Emmanuel Ajayi. We are graduates of political science and History from the University of Ilorin. We started singing at the tender Age of 12 and 10 respectively. But we got into music professionally immediately after graduation. We got signed into Alapomeji Records two years ago and we have had a couple of singles including Little Mama featuring 9ice, State of Emergency and Gbodowa. We also have done Collaboration like Appetizer with 9ice which became an instant Hit.
How did you veer into music?
Our basic inspiration came from God and our dad who happens to be a Choir director way back. He used to take us with him to the Choir practice. Our Dad and mum’s influence basically got us here.
Most upcoming Nigerian artiste are joining music out of frustration because they couldn’t get jobs elsewhere. Just, what is your story?
In our case, we joined music due to the immense passion we have for music. I will call it the love of music and melodies. Basically we are well educated with a degree and diplomas. Besides, Peter left the banking industry where he worked briefly for mainstream music.
What genre of music do you do and why?
Well, we will like to call our own music genre ‘’Assorted” because it’s a blend of virtually everything with Hip-hop as the backbone.
I understand you were doing backup for 9ice, why did you leave? Did you fall out with him?
Anyway, this is how it is: We are the first signed Artist under 9ice’s record label, Alapomeji Records. We were not signed as backup singers. As a crew in the same record label, we go to shows with him to assist and back him up whenever he needs us but that doesn’t stop us from doing our own songs and shows. Who says we left? We are still with Alapomeji and we grace shows together with him whenever our service is needed.
How many albums have you done thus far?
We just released our debut album titled “Street Bankers” we are currently working on the distribution.
Are you also into life performances? Where have you performed?
Yes, we have performed in many shows at home and abroad. In some of the shows, we performed alone and in others we performed with 9ice. Some of the shows include Starmix Show at Troxy in London, Malaysia, Ghana, Star Mega Jam in Nigeria, MTN Tour, Glo Tour, Calabar Carnival and Many, many more. Soon we will be embarking on a European and American tour too.
As upcoming artistes, doesn’t the menace of piracy bother you?
It’s a very big blow, not just to us but the whole industry because it is a situation of Monkey dey work Baboon dey Chop in the Nigerian music industry. We plead with the Government to intervene quickly.
In your view, how can Nigeria deal with piracy?
The Government should set up a regulatory body that controls the affairs of the artistes. And they should also create an avenue for foreign record labels to invest into the country e.g Song B.M.G. That will go a long way in organizing the industry and may scare away the pirates. There should also be a law that will make piracy an unforgivable offence in the Nigerian Constitution because the pirates are stealing our intellectual property, which is bad.
What do you think about the Nigerian music industry in terms of growth?
The Nigerian Music industry is growing fast and can stand up to any music industry in the world in terms of talents and other aspects. Now the industry has a massive fan base from all over the world.
How can we develop the industry?
We need foreign investors and the government should make it their priority to emphasize more on the music industry for sustainable growth.
You are brothers and working together, how do you manage disagreements?
Though we seldom disagree, we are of the same blood so we are used to ourselves. We compromise and move on, setting our eyes on the prize.
