A medical outreach sponsored by National Agency for Control of AIDS (NACA) counselled and tested at least 5,000 people in a Bayelsa community over four days.
The outreach is a nationwide project of NACA in collaboration with the Subsidy Reinvestment and Empowerment Programme  SURE-P across 30 states under the Presidential Comprehensive Response Plan to test 50 million Nigerians for HIV between 2014 and 2015.
Head of SURE-P unit of NACA Dr. Rosemary Adu who addressed the medical team in charge of the exercise at BGGS, Ovom community in Yenagoa said the plan included free medical care for multiple diseases including malaria, diabetes and hypertension as well as HIV treatment to an additional 600,000 HIV-positive Nigerians.
The head of the medical team said that NACA was working at reducing new HIV infections and combating stigma against people living with HIV.
One beneficiary Ebi Sunday commended the federal government for the free medical scheme and urged the organizations to sustain the exercise and make it regular.
Counseling services were provided to the beneficiaries while waiting to be attended to by the health professionals.
