FG’s fertiliser initiative seems to be increasing access to the input across the country.
The Federal Government said it has distributed over 1.9 million bags of fertiliser and 12,000 litres of organic fertiliser to nearly 1 million farmers over the last two years.
Minister of Agriculture and Food Security, Sen. Abubakar Kyari, stated this yesterday in Abuja during an engagement with stakeholders, including civil society organisations, donor agencies, farmers’ organisations, the media, processors, farmers, and other actors in the sector.
Kyari, along with the Minister of Information, Alhaji Mohammed Idris, Minister of State for Agriculture and Food Security, Sen Sabi Abdullahi, presented the ministry’s scorecard and responded to the critical questions worrying farmers.
The minister stated that the government has also entered into agreements and partnerships with Russia, Turkey, India, and Canada to improve fertiliser output and technology transfer.
The minister also said that the federal government has granted a N250 billion facility to the Bank of Agriculture (BOA) to support smallholder farmers in Nigeria, providing them with access to credit at a single-digit interest rate.
On seed, he said that the release of 65 improved crop varieties with enhanced yields, climate resilience, and nutritional profiles was a game-changer for Nigerian farmers, adding that these varieties boost drought tolerance, disease resistance, and suitability for mechanisation, making them ideal for smallholder farmers and commercial producers.
