Taking care of your goats this wet season

No few than 1, 250 pregnant women and nursing mothers in three local government areas of Jigawa state benefitted from free chicken and goats distributed by a non-governmental organization, Save the Children.

The animals were distributed to the beneficiaries with a view to empowering them as part of the donor agency’s intervention on improving child nutrition in the state.

Apart from the animals, the women also benefitted from a free gift of sewing and spaghetti making machines.

Speaking during the distribution of the empowerment packages, the Nigerian Program Manager of the NGO, Dr. Liman Muhammad, said illiteracy and poverty were the major contributory factors to child malnutrition indices in the state.

“After assessing the impact made by the state government in distributing goats on loan as a source of empowerment to women in the state, Save the Children decided to borrow a leaf from the state government by adding chicken in the package in order to improve child nutrition in the state.”

In his remark, the Executive Secretary of Jigawa State Primary Healthcare Development Agency, Dr. Kabiru Ibrahim said the child nutrition indices in the state was a source of concern and in an effort to surmount the challenges, the state government allocated N300 million to the sector.
