More than 10,000 students from primary and secondary schools across Nigeria on Saturday participated in the 23rd Annual National Mathematics Competition (ANMC), organised by Nigerian Tulip International Colleges (NTIC) in collaboration with the National Mathematical Centre (NMC).

The competition featured pupils from Primary 5 and 6, as well as students in Junior Secondary School (JSS) 1 to 3, and was conducted simultaneously at centres across 31 states and the Federal Capital Territory (FCT).

Speaking at the event, NTIC Managing Director, Dr Fevzullah Bilgin, described the ANMC as one of the largest and most prestigious mathematics competitions in the country.

He said the competition, which began in 2003, was designed to promote effective teaching and learning of mathematics at the basic education level and to build students’ capacity in the subject. He added that while the competition initially targeted only Primary 5 and 6 pupils, the junior secondary category was introduced in 2022 to extend participation to JSS 1–3 students.

Dr Bilgin noted that the ANMC has grown into a nationwide platform for nurturing mathematical talent, stressing that strong mathematical skills are essential for success in STEM and other science-based disciplines.

Beyond competition, the ANMC also serves as a scholarship platform. Outstanding students who qualify after the second round will receive full-tuition scholarships to study at NTIC, as well as cash prizes. Mathematics teachers of successful students will also receive cash rewards, while their schools will be given educational materials, including computers and tablets.

The ANMC Coordinator, Mr Erdal, said that since its inception, over 500,000 pupils have participated in the competition nationwide, with more than 600 outstanding students awarded full scholarships covering tuition and boarding throughout their secondary education.
