At least 1,574 beneficiaries and next-of-kin of deceased police officers have received N2.17 billion under the Group Life Assurance and IGP Family Welfare Schemes, the police said.
The payout, presented at Force Headquarters Abuja, marks the 11th phase of the welfare exercise, which has disbursed N24.2bn to 9,735 families since the current Inspector-General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun, assumed office.
The initiative comes amid continued nationwide attacks on security operatives. In just two weeks, no fewer than 53 personnel—including soldiers, police officers, NSCDC staff, Immigration officers, Customs officials, vigilantes, and Civilian JTF members—have been killed, Daily Trust investigations revealed.
While presenting the cheques, IGP Egbetokun described the scheme as more than a statutory obligation, calling it “a sacred trust” to honour fallen heroes and support their families.

He said the benefits cover policy years from 2015 to 2025, including long-outstanding claims redeemed through sustained engagement with insurers.
“These cheques are a symbol of our collective gratitude and a pledge that you remain part of the Nigeria Police family,” he told the families, adding that the welfare of serving, retired, and deceased officers remains a priority.
He consoled grieving families, acknowledging that no monetary sum could replace the lives of loved ones lost in the line of duty, but reassured them of the force’s continued support.
