The FCT Health Insurance Scheme (FHIS) has recorded over 250,000 enrollees across the Federal Capital Territory, as the administration intensifies efforts to achieve universal health coverage.

The Acting Director of FHIS, Dr. Salamatu Belgore, disclosed this during the launch of the enrollment of members of the House of Representatives Press Corps.

The initiative follows the sponsorship of one-year coverage for journalists by the Chairman of the House Committee on Media and Public Affairs, Hon. Akin Rotimi.

Dr. Belgore stated that the mandate of the scheme is to ensure every resident of the FCT is financially protected when accessing healthcare services.

As a social health insurance programme, the scheme currently operates through more than 200 accredited healthcare facilities spread across the six area councils of the FCT.

According to her, the FHIS runs three major programmes, the Formal Sector Plan for public and organized private sector workers, the Informal Sector Plan, which targets business owners and individuals and the Vulnerable Group Package, which is under the Basic Health Care Provision Fund (BHCPF).

“In total, we currently have over 250,000 enrollees on the scheme,” Dr. Belgore said, noting that the scheme has consistently surpassed its Presidential Deliverable Target of enrolling at least 25,000 residents annually over the past three years.

Speaking at the event, Hon. Rotimi said the initiative was anchored on the commitment of the 10th Assembly to strengthen engagement with the media and support the well-being of journalists covering legislative activities.

He acknowledged the support of the Speaker of the House of Representatives, Abbas Tajudeen, noting that the Press Corps plays a critical role in the country’s legislative process.

In her remarks, the Mandate Secretary of the FCT Health Services and Environment Secretariat, Dr. Dolapo Fasawe, described the sponsorship as a significant contribution to expanding healthcare access. She was represented at the event by the Permanent Secretary, Dr. Babagana Adam.
