The Federal Government has disclosed that a total of N635,355,000 has been disbursed to 278,727 vulnerable households in Imo State under the ongoing Household Uplifting Programme and Empowerment through Cash Transfers (HOPE-CT).

The intervention covers beneficiaries across the 27 local government areas of the state.

Speaking during an engagement with beneficiaries, the Minister of Humanitarian Affairs and Poverty Reduction, Dr. Bernard Doro, said the programme was designed to support vulnerable families, empower women, create opportunities for young people, and improve the welfare of children and other disadvantaged citizens.

According to him, beyond the figures, the real measure of success lies in the positive impact the programme is having on the lives of beneficiaries.

“The most important aspect of this programme is ensuring that every intervention implemented by government delivers meaningful outcomes and contributes to the overall objective of reducing poverty and improving lives,” he said.

Doro noted that the engagement aligns with the Federal Government’s broader vision of building a unified humanitarian and poverty reduction response system across the country.

Highlighting success stories from other states, the minister said many beneficiaries had used the funds productively to improve their living conditions.

“In Kwara State, we met a beneficiary who utilized her support to pay her daughter’s school fees, ensuring that her child remained in school despite economic challenges.

“We also encountered a young beneficiary who invested his support in a pure water business, creating a sustainable source of livelihood for himself and contributing to economic activity within his community,” he said.

Also speaking, the Imo State Commissioner for Humanitarian Affairs, Disaster Management and Social Development, Chief Kenneth Okafor, said the state government had ensured that beneficiaries received their cash transfers under the HOPE-CT programme.

He said the intervention had positively impacted households by supporting small businesses, improving family welfare, strengthening food security, assisting educational needs, and stimulating economic activities at the grassroots level.

Okafor cautioned beneficiaries against paying anyone for access to the programme or its benefits.

He urged them to report any cases of exploitation, misinformation, or fraudulent activities through the appropriate channels.

Meanwhile, the Chairman of Orsu Local Government Area, Hon. Ibekaeme Friday Umunakwe, commended the initiative and appealed for the continued implementation of the programme.

He also requested that Orsu Local Government Area be included among the benefiting councils under future phases of the intervention.
