Over 400 cows, 1500 goats slaughtered in FCT daily

The FCT Director of Veterinary Services, Dr. Regina Adulugba, has disclosed that an estimated 400 to 500 cows and 1,500 goats and sheep are slaughtered in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) daily.
 Mrs. Adulugba disclosed this at a training organised by the Federal Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development through the Federal Department of Veterinary Services to build the capacity of butchers in the territory. 
She said the estimated figure applied more during the rainy season as the territory experienced low season of slaughter of animals during the dry season.
 She said the training was very significant because, among others, they have had issues with using the common salt to preserve hides and skins, which affected the quality of the product.
Mrs. Adulugba said the use of industrial salt prolonged the products and also prevented the bacteria that might be haboured in the skin as a result of the animal not been properly bled.
 Earlier, the Director, Federal Department of Veterinary Services, Dr. Gideon Mshel Bwala, said the training was necessary because the hides and skins generated in the FCT were not been converted for economic use, saying it was mostly eaten as kpomo.
Represented by Dr. Samuel Anzaku of the Federal Department of Veterinary Services, he said the intervention in the area of improved flaying method for hides and skins production and the practical demonstration of the use of industrial salt for preservation of hides and skin was necessary as Nigeria has the best hides and skin in the world.
