The Kwara State Commandant of the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC), Umar Mohammed, has disclosed that over 60 cases of domestic violence and physical assault have been recorded under his leadership.
Speaking at a one-day seminar organised by the gender unit of the corps to mark the International Day for the Elimination of Violence Against Women, Mohammed said, “The gender unit under my leadership has effectively addressed 50 cases of domestic violence and handled 10 instances of physical assault with several cases currently in court.”
While reiterating the command’s commitment to eradicate Gender-Based Violence (GBV) in the state, Mohammed said the command was equally committed to seeking justice for victims, emphasising the corps’ readiness to collaborate with relevant stakeholders to wage a comprehensive war against “this societal menace.”
In her remarks, head of the unit, Dada Rachael, emphasised the importance of raising awareness regarding women and girls in the public domain.
She noted that the initiative sought to bring together partners for constructive discussions on the challenges and opportunities involved in eliminating violence against women and girls.
The state’s National Human Rights Coordinator, Barrister Olaoye Olajumoke, on her part, advocated the need to adopt and strengthen policies for the promotion of gender equality and the empowerment of women and girls at all levels.
She stressed the importance of designing mechanisms to eliminate discrimination against women and girls in both public and private spheres, encompassing sexual and other forms of exploitation.
