The Minister of Women Affairs, Hajiya Aisha Alhassan, has said over 67 percent of the people displaced by insurgency in the North are children.
“Insurgency and counter insurgency activities in the North-East have displaced over 1.3 million people of which 67 percent are children,” she said.
The minister, who said this during the Children’s Day party organised for children at the internally displaced persons camp in Kuchigoro, Abuja, condemned in strong terms the brutality meted on children in the face of insecurity and violence in the country.
The minister who was represented by the Permanent Secretary, Mrs. Binta A. Bello, told the children that they would be relocated and reunited with their families and relatives as soon as peace was restored in the North-East.
She said hundreds of children have also been killed, injured or abducted from their homes and schools while many others experienced the death of one or both parents, family separation, loss of home and disturbance of their education.
The camp coordinator, Philemon Emmanuel, commended the ministry for the effort saying that it showed they were not forgotten.
