The Federal Government through the Federal Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development, has supported over 800 hide and skin dealers in Katsina with industrial salt for preservation of their commodity.

In his remarks during a brief distribution ceremony held in Katsina on yesterday, the state coordinator of the Ministry, Alhaji Sule Muammad Salisu, said Katsina state produces the best quality hide and skin in the country but the quality was usually affected due to lack of tanning factory in the state.

“Unfortunately, they have to transport it to Kano for tanning and processing which takes a lot of time and affects the quality. So to minimize damage, the ministry decided to support them with this industrial salt to preserve the commodity before it gets to the factories,” he said.

He added that over 800 dealers will benefit from the support of 2,036 50kg bags which costed over N35m.

The idea behind this distribution is to boost the morale of the hide and skin dealers, create more jobs through their business and improve IGR to both the state and the federal government.

“It is also aimed at strengthening the collaboration between the government and associations like this so that empowerments like this one could be easily given to members through the associations who in turn support the government in sensitizing their members on government policies whenever the need arises,” he said.

Also in his remarks, the Chairman of the Hide and Skin Dealers Association in Katsina, Alhaji Rabiu Abdulkarim Bakori, thanked the federal government for the guesture and called on President Muhammadu Buhari as well Katsina State governor, Aminu Bello Masari, to revisit the abandoned tanning factory in Daura, which he said was started during the second republic governor of old Kaduna state, Alhaji Balarabe Musa.
