Tragedy struck in Edo State over the weekend when a building under construction collapsed, killing its owner, identified as Harrison Isesele.

It was gathered that other workers at the site narrowly escaped unhurt.

The incident occurred in the Idumoza community of Uromi, Esan North-East Local Government Area, when the owner visited to inspect the progress of the construction.

Sources said the one-storey building, intended to serve as a hotel, collapsed suddenly without any prior warning.

The owner, who was reportedly at the site to monitor the roofing stage of the project, was trapped under the rubble and died before help could reach him.

Eyewitnesses said the workers present managed to flee moments before the structure gave way.

It was alleged that the collapse may have been caused by the use of substandard building materials.

A witness, who preferred to be anonymous, claimed that the owner had been cautioned about using low-quality materials, noting that 12mm rods were used for the pillars instead of the recommended 16mm.

Efforts to obtain a response regarding the collapsed building were unsuccessful, as calls and text messages sent to Fred Itua, spokesperson to Governor Monday Okpeholo, and CSP Moses Yamu, spokesperson for the Edo State Police Command, went unanswered.
