Speaking after an interactive session with the Committee on Private Universities of the National Universities Commission (NUC), the acting president of Oke Ogun Development Council (ODC), Mr. Doja Oladele, said the community is in need of a tertiary institution.
“Oke Ogun has a population of about 1.5 million people according to 2006 census and comprises 10 local government areas with a land mass of about two-third of the present Oyo State. Yet, it has no tertiary institution like university or polytechnic. Our children have to travel hundreds of kilometres to have access to that level of education,” he said.
Oladele added that many of their qualified children do not get slots in institutions across the country when the policy of ‘catchment area’ is applied, noting that “this is why we decided to take the bull by the horn to establish our own university.”
Also speaking, Professor Dibu Ojerinde, Registrar/Chief Executive of the Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB), who is an indigene of the area, praised the federal government for making the provision for establishing private universities.
“It is that opportunity we want to seize to establish our own university after several efforts to get the federal or state governments’ own university located in our area had failed,” he said.
