Oyo State government announced the imposition of the curfew on Wednesday at its executive council meeting presided over by Governor Christopher Adebayo Alao-Akala. Briefing journalists shortly after the Exco meeting, the Secretary to the State Government, Chief Layiwola Olakojo stated that the curfew came on the heels of a communal crisis involving militant youths of Modeke and Obaogo sides of the agrarian community who had engaged in superiority contest.

It was gathered that the ugly development which reared its head on Monday had left more than fifty of the embattled youths with gunshot wounds.

The SSG declared that government would not hesitate to deal decisively with anybody found to have been incriminated in the communal tussle.

To this end, he warned everybody to heed to the curfew order which is from 6p.m. to 6a.m. daily effective Wednesday, December 2, 2009 until further notice.

The SSG maintained that anybody caught flouting the order would found himself to blame, irrespective of his status in the society.

Trouble started at Oba Alepata area of Igboho at around 6 p.m. on Monday when a man called Ismaila Igaada, a.k.a. Omojomolo was reportedly attacked by a rival youth group for daring to come to their territory. The resultant commotion eventually snowballed into a shooting spree.

The incident had compelled the State Commissioner of Police, Mr Bola Adisa Bolanta, to deploy his men led by the Area Commander to the scene. Even though the Police Commissioner maintained that there was no casualty recorded and that the situation had been put under control, eye witness accounts revealed that not fewer that fifty of the combatants were left with varied degrees of gunshot wounds.
