The Peace Corps of Nigeria (PCN) has called on the Federal Government to consider deploying its personnel nationwide to various schools in order to protect them against bandits and terrorists’ invasion.

The corps, while describing the development as a “dangerous trend” that should tamed quickly, bemoaned the abduction of innocent pupils and teachers for ransom purposes.

Weekend Trust reports that school children with the age range between 2 and 14 were abducted a few days ago in both Oyo and Borno States by terrorists hibernating in the bushes.

Speaking at a press briefing in Abuja, National Commandant of the Corps, Dickson Akoh, lamented that the wanton attacks on schools will not only induce severe psychological trauma, but permanent fear among students.

The Corps warned that the systemic criminal assault on the academic system, if left unchecked, will threaten to completely undermine the fabric of the educational sector. 

According to him, the abduction will also discourage parents from sending their wards to schools and colleges, thereby jeopardizing the future of Nigerian youths in the country.

“By training and deploying disciplined officers and men as specialized safety officers, the initiative will address critical issues such as cultism, drug abuse, and unauthorized access, establishing a proactive, community-driven presence within schools and colleges to safeguard lives and property,” he said.
